What is the New Fentanyl Crisis

According to an article in the NY Times on Oct 5, 2023; “Fentanyl has become a leading cause of death in the United States.”

Liz Mineo, Staff Writer for the Harvard Gazette, reported on July 19,2023; “Deaths involving illicit drugs and prescription opioids have risen since 2017, when the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services declared the problem a public health emergency. The number of reported overdose deaths hit 68,000 in 2020 and rose to more than 80,000 by 2021”

According to the Global Health Education and Learning Incubator at Harvard; “In 2020, opioid-related overdose deaths increased from 50,000 to 70,000; “more than 80 percent of these deaths are attributable to synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.”

Why is Fentanyl so dangerous? Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that’s 50-100 times stronger than the pain reliever morphine. While some people use fentanyl on purpose, many others get it in their systems without their knowledge. That’s because drug dealers often mix fentanyl — which is inexpensive but strong — into other drugs like heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and MDMA
